FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WORLD

Where does this game take place?

Melodies of Eternity takes place on the world of Vaikuntha. Players arrive from other worlds through the Dream Width/Interdimensional Cloud and choose to live in which of the major cities to live in, though much of the world remains to be explored. More information about the world of Vaikuntha and its relationship to Crystallis will be revealed during the course of the game through events and player-lead plots.

How does my character arrive in Vaikuntha?

The workers at the Curti Center will detect unusual energy wavers emitted by the Dream Width that surrounds Vaikuntha and travel to the pinpointed location via Airship. Biggs and Wedge will retrieve the characters they find and bring them to the Curti Center, where they will wake up.

What does my character arrive with?

Characters arrive at the Curti Center with only the clothes they were wearing at their canon point. They can regain items during the course of Melodies of Eternity.

What’s the Interdimensional Cloud/Dream Width?

The Interdimension Sea or "Dream Width" is the space surrounding the planet of Vaikuntha. It cannot be colonized nor are there lifeforms native to it, however it is said to be a gateway to other dimensions. Indeed, whilst there are no way to go to other worlds, your characters have arrived through it. Characters lost in the Dream Width cause a nebula to form, taking the form of their memories and in which they will be lost forever, unless a third party enter the nebula and snap them out of the illusion.

This is how all characters arrive in the world of Vaikuntha: they are lost in their memory and characters already in the game come to rescue them.

Where does my character live?

Given that they are completely new to this world and need some help before they can support themselves, Characters are provided free housing at the Curti Center for the first five months of their stay. During that time, they will get situated to their surroundings and search for a permanent home and occupation. After that time is up, they have to find new living arrangements. There’s so many newcomers and so little space, after all!

Wait, so we don’t all live in the same city?

Correct! Unlike in Melodies of Life, there is no centralized location where all of the characters live. They are free to pick which nation to become a citizen of, or choose to wander between countries.

How are the characters treated by the native residents?

They are treated no different than natives for the most part. Some may be curious about their homeworlds and what the Dream Width is like, but that won't net them any advantage over the regular populace.

Will the characters receive more personal help?

New characters are provided a Moogle guide to help them understand the local customs. They can teach them how to use Mognet, provide a tour of the cities, and be a player-controlled NPC. Players are free to play the Moogles however they want - they can dismiss them if wanted, have them stick around, or form some odd animosity.

What level of technology is available?

Technology varies from nation to nation. Myste Aura represents an extreme where magic is used for everything, whereas Oktavia is another extreme where technology is highly advanced. As a general rule, technology in this world is presented under the form of Magitek: ancient technology revived through the use of magic.

How many countries are in this world?

There are many peoples and cultures in Vaikuntha, but there are five major countries that most can be considered affiliated with.

What are the Five Main Countries like?

Myste Aura is a highly mystical country, with a focus on magic, at the difference of Von Oktavia that is focusing on developing cutting edge technologies. The Republic of Safer is a militaristic nation whereas Min'To is a scholarly one. Very little is known about the Empire at this point in time.

Is this game plot heavy?

Yes! The plot will normally be delivered via game-wide network posts and events interspersed with laid-back events. However, the plot of the game will be shaped by the choices made by players during events. Furthermore, Player Plots are encouraged. Multiple outcomes are possible for the game conclusion, but the best ones will require for players to take initiative and make their own plot to pierce the secrets of this world and stop the antagonists.

APPLYING

How many characters can I app?

For now, players are allowed to app three characters into Melodies of Eternity with a limit of two characters per app cycle. App cycles are bimonthly. Check out the Applications Page for the dates of the next reserve and app cycle.

What type of characters are appable?

Players can app canon characters, original characters, malleable protagonists (such as Dragon Age protagonists), native OCs, and CRAUs, and characters from canon AUs and fandom AUs. We do not allow Fandom OCs. Doubles will only be allowed if they are AU, thus, no more than one canon version of a character will be allowed.

For plot purposes, the following characters are not appable: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy series), any Summon/Eidolon (Final Fantasy series), Cloud of Darkness (Final Fantasy series), Godbert (Final Fantasy series), Biggs Darklighter and Wedge Antilles (Star Wars), and the CRAUs for characters who were permakilled or sacrificed themselves in Melodies of Life.

What is the headcanon to canon ratio for minor characters or characters withe little canon information?

We ask that your application contain more canon than headcanon. The ratio should be at least 55% canon to 45% headcanon, and anywhere you can provide canon evidence for the headcanon you have created will be helpful as well.

How soon can I app a character after a new canon/new installment of a canon is released?

We instate a wait period of 2 months to prevent spoilers in the game.

What CRAU are acceptable?

Any journal RP game will be accepted, including Melodies of Life. However, characters who were permakilled or sacrificed themselves in Melodies of Life will not be appable as that version of the character (other versions of the character will be accepted, including Native versions).

My character is a CRAU from Melodies of Life. Will they receive any bonuses for arriving to a similar setting?

Melodies of Life Heroes have the option of reuniting with their Moogles from Crystallis. They may find references to their adventures hidden throughout the world.

What about non-human characters?

Non-human characters would retain their original appearance as well as any particular ability indissociable from their basic physiology (flying for a dragon, breathing underwater for a fish person, etc). Their height would be reduced however, and they can be x1.5 as tall as a human being (3-4 meters max).

What if a character is dead in canon, or severely injured/disabled?

If a character is dead or severely injured at their canon point, their body will revert to its state before death. That is, if someone just got a sword to the spine, they will arrive in perfect condition. Those with disabilities during canon will retain those disabilities to the player's discretion, and there are Jobs and technology that can make their lives easier.

What are Native OCs?
Native OCs are characters born in the world of Vaikuntha. They are hired by the Curti Center to help the newly rescued characters from the Dream Width. With the larger than usual influx of rescued characters, the Curti Center cannot handle them all on its own. Native OCs are expected to help the rescued characters adapt to life on Vaikuntha and guide them as necessary. They have access to the same Mognet rights as everyone else and will have a Moogle assigned to them to work with them. As the truth behind their past lives get revealed, they may realize they are not so different from characters who were found in the Dream Width.

What about their past life?
In their past life, Native OCs were either Canon Characters, OCs, Fandom AUs or CRAUs. At some point they died, under unknown circumstances. Following their death, they were reborn on the world of Vaikuntha. The circumstances of their death in their past life will be a part of their character arc. As Native OCs share the same gift than the characters rescued from the Dream Width, they will take part in Events and Players Plots just like them.

Must I write a story for their life on Vaikuntha?
Yes. As their story begins, Native OCs have no clue their souls originated from another world. They may have a slight feeling that they were missing something in their lives, perhaps that they didn't really belong there, but otherwise Vaikuntha is their home. They were born there, in one of the main cities. However, Native OCs born within the Empire are not allowed at the moment.

An application for a native OC must include elements pertaining both to who they are now and to who they used to be.

Are there different sample requirements for Native OCs
As with other types of characters, we expect at least 2 samples, with at least 1 with a different player. One or both the samples should be written in the AU-verse.

My character was a a Mi'qote in their past life, can they still be one?
No, Native OCs must be from one of the species found on Vaikuntha. It is recommended to pick the species closest to what they used to be.

Does my Native OC have a Job? Employment? Anything?
Native OCs were recently hired by the Curti Center. As such, they receive a monthly wage for their effort of 45 000 Gil. They start off with a Job and a bonus of 200 exp in it, as they probably started learning their Job long before Melodies of Eternity started. They can take on multiple Jobs like the other characters can.

Native OCs can start off with an housing in one of the main cities. However in an effort to be fair to everyone, please refrain from having your Native OC already own an Airship, from being rich, or from having an important social position in the world. They are regular citizens and the truth of their past will come to light as the story progresses. Indeed, it will be possible for them to regain the memories of their past life at some point.

JOB SYSTEM AND ABILITIES

How do Jobs work?

Job Classes are the source of powerful skills and abilities in Vaikuntha. For more information about the basic job mechanics, check out the Job Mechanics page HERE. Jobs are learned by acquiring the job asterisk, which is available at the Guild for that job.

What about my character's innate powers?

Any supernatural powers or greater than human abilities will be lost when the character passes through the Dream Width and arrives in Vaikuntha. Characters can take on Jobs to gain useful skills and special abilities.

Do we have Limit Breaks?

As of the game opening, characters will not have the ability to use Limit Breaks due to plot reasons. As the game progresses, all characters will have one and a Limit Break section will be included on the application.

Can my character die? Is it permanent?

Yes. Characters can be killed, and unless a White Mage with the Supreme Skill "Resurrection" or a Chemist with the Supreme Skill "Phoenix Down" is able to revive them, they will be permanently dead. Alternate versions of characters who die can be apped, but that version of a character cannot return.

If a character dies whilst exploring the Dream Width however, they will not die permanently. They will be lost in one of their memory and others will have to rescue them.

Can I switch which two Jobs to use?

Yes, characters will begin the game with the ability to equip an Active Job, a Passive Job, and a Reserve Job. Switching between Active and Passive jobs can be done anytime using the iMog Slate, and will take one turn if switched in battle.

Switching out an equipped job with a Reserve Job can only be done outside of events and battles, and can only be switched once every two weeks. If a job is discarded to make room for another job, any experience points used on the discarded job will be forfeited unless the player has purchased an extra job storage slot. A job can be discarded at any time, but a new job cannot be added to a job slot until the character visits the appropriate Guild to acquire that job asterisk.

MECHANICS

What is the IC:OOC day ratio?

The ratio is 1:1, that is, one IC day equals one day OOC

What are Experience Points? How do we receive points?

Experience Points (or EXP) are earned through game participation, and they can be spent on Job Skill trees to unlock job skills or additional job slots. Characters will earn EXP points by passing Activity Checks, participating in events and player plots, etc. The monthly information post will let players know how much EXP can be gained by participating.

What is the Activity Check like?

We require at least ten log comments or 20 network comments from each character, with a log/network post counting as its own comment. Log and network comments can be combined for AC. Comments must be from the month in question, but they can be taken from logs or posts that were started up to three months in the past. Activity check opens on the last week of each month and closes at 11:59pm (EST) on the 7th or the following month. AC must be turned in by that deadline to count towards experience points. Players that do not submit AC by the deadline are given 48 hours to turn it in or else receive a strike. If a player does not respond to the warning post to request a strike, they will be removed from the game.

A character who has been on hiatus for at least two weeks will be exempt from that month’s AC. Please message the mods if you need to hiatus for a period longer than one month.

How do we clear strikes?

Players who receive a strike one month must submit double AC for the next month (20 comments total). If a player receives two strikes in a row, they will be considered to have idled out and be removed from the game.

Will there be an HMD?

Each character will be required to put up a personal HMD on their journal, and a game-locked HMD meme will be put up every three months for players to provide feedback to each other and the mods.

How do player plots work?

There are two types of player-lead events: exploration side quests and player plots. The latter is required to be open to the entire game and be presented to the mods at least two weeks before it begins. They function the same was as mod-created events in that they will be featured in the monthly information post and will earn participants Experience Points. For more information and player plot sign-ups, check out the Player Plot page HERE.

What are side quests?

The world of Vaikuntha is vast, and we encourage players to explore the wilds and regions to learn more about the history of the world. Players are free to start their own exploration groups and consult the mods for information, or they can sign up for a mod-assigned side quest.

How do we handle battles?

Each tag counts as one character's or boss's "turn", where they can take one action (simple movement does not count as an action). In mod-run boss fights, the mod team will determine whether attacks hit or miss and will keep track of damage inflicted on the boss. We will let characters know if an attack leaves a character KO’ed or status-inflicted, but otherwise will generally leave character damage calculation up to the player. There are no strict guidelines to player-run battles, but we expect to be general agreement among the group. If you would like help resolving a non-mod run battle, please contact the mod team. God-modding or Power-modding will not be permitted, and if there is questionable behavior happening in a thread, please contact a mod.

Can we regain items from their homeworlds?

Yes! When a character gains enough "regain points" through threading, they can submit a request here. In-game, they would receive nothing of something emitting wavelengths similar to their own in the Dream Width, and they would have to either hire a ship pilot or fly their own to retrieve it.

What about abilities?

An option to regain a character's real power will be added within the game's first year. It will be called "Custom Job" and will involve creating a personal Job out of the character's powers. This Custom Job won't be shareable.

How do drops, hiatuses, and canon updates work?

At points, characters will disappear from Vaikuntha without realizing, and they will be found back in the Dream Width. When they awake, they will have no recollection of remaining there but retain their new memories.

Characters on hiatus have the option of putting their character on auto-pilot if the length of the hiatus is less than 2 weeks.

Can I canon update an OU character into an AU?

A character cannot be updated from an OU version to an AU version. The OU would need to be dropped and the AU apped in. They would start as if they were a new character. Memories and EXP would not transfer.

Can I canon update an AU character within their existing AU?

Yes, with one exception - characters with Melodies of Life CRAU can only be apped from the endgame, after Kalki is defeated. This is due to plot reasons.

How can we contact the mods?

The mod team can be reached by commenting on the Mod Contact page (all comments are screened) or by messaging the mod journal. If you feel more comfortable contacting an individual mod, our plurk information is listed on the Mod Contact page as well. Feel free to send private plurks to the individual mods, but please do not pp the Mod Plurk account, as we do not regularly check that account.

Unfortunately, I'm an Idiot Who Cannot Read apparently, so I missed that the App sample section requires two different samples instead of just one. orz

Since I couldn't find anything on policy in regards to minor edits on the app on any of the info pages, I figured I'd ask here: Would it be okay to go into an already submitted up for edits (such as correcting grammar/links, adding another another sample)?

Yes of course, thanks a lot! I'll be adding two links for samples!
