THE DREAM WIDTH
![]() The Dream Width has many names in the world of Vaikuntha. The researchers at the Curti Center refer to it as the “Interdimensional Cloud”, while the smugglers of Kiddilion call it the “Intergalactic Sea”. However, the Pupus have been calling it the Dream Width since before life on Vaikuntha began, so their term is the most ingrained in popular usage.
No matter what name is used, there are a few key points that everyone agrees on. First off, the Dream Width is known to surround the world of Vaikuntha, a space that is simultaneously sheltering and cutting off the world from other dimensions. Travel through the Dream Width is only possible with specially-equipped airships, and can only be attempted in short bursts. Those that enter the Dream Width for too long end up trapped in their own memories, unable to break free and return. When this happens, they must be rescued by others or remain lost in the stars. People and items are pulled in to the Dream Width from their various worlds, but so far, no one has been able to return by the same route. In school, children of Vaikuntha are taught that the Dream Width acts like an extremely powerful gravity field around the world- pulling items in and keeping them from flying back out. However, the Dream Width is more than just a field cutting the world off from everywhere else- it almost seems to have a will of its own. Characters will sometimes find that the Dream Width has provided them with a desired object or beloved pet from their homeworld. The Dream Width has kept the world of Vaikuntha safe from harm for thousands of years, bringing in outsiders only occasionally until now. When characters arrive through the Dream Width, they are in a dream-like state, lost in memories, and must be rescued by Biggs, Wedge, and whatever Heroes join them in their mission. To outsiders, the lost characters manifest as a nebula in the Dream Width, and by entering the nebula they can take part in the memory and save lost characters from it. Similarly, if characters enter the Dream Width unprotected or travel in it for too long (including trying to pass through and find an exit to their home world), they will lose track of reality and return to that state of being engrossed in their memories. Because of the Dream Width’s unique shielding properties, characters will find themselves cut off from their ties to their home worlds on Vaikuntha. Powers, including Melodies of Life Job Crystals, will disappear, although they may resurface when the character enters the Dream Width. Why were these people pulled into the Dream Width and brought to Vaikuntha? On that, no one can agree. It is possible time will shine light on this mystery. How does the Dream Width function for the introduction? The Dream Width allows new characters to be pulled into the game. By rescuing them from their memories, characters already in-game can get to know newcomers and form a bond with them, even if they would never have spoken otherwise. When posting your introduction upon being accepted in Melodies of Eternity, your introduction will have two components: one where they are lost in their “memory” so characters can rescue them, and one after they’ve been rescued and are in the Curti Center.
If you wish to skip the Memory part altogether, then by default it is assumed Biggs and Wedge are the ones that rescued your character. Are there any particulars regarding my character’s powers in the Dream Width? In regular Dream Width travels, your characters keep their usual Job powers, however they are immortal. If they are killed, rather than die for real, they will get lost in one of their memories and have to be rescued by others.
Within memories, the rules of the “lost character’s world” apply. It means Job powers no longer works. Characters have access to their true powers if they originate from this world, and if they originate from another world they may experience what powers and abilities they would have if they lived in the lost character’s homeworld. Note that your character’s true powers cannot affect the space beyond the memory they are in. Can I explore the Dream Width? Yes, it is actually encouraged. If you wish to explore the Dream Width on your own, you are free to come up with memories and scenarios within these memories for you to play with, though it implies your character got lost and needs to be rescued. Native AU's, if they are lost in a memory of their past selves, will regain the context of that memory upon retrieval.
If you want to try and pierce its secrets, your characters may find special nebulas or secrets. This would count as a player plot, therefore please contact the moderating team as you would for a Player Plot then. |
